Polar seminar: Ricardo Alcamí
Today at the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC), we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Ricardo Alcamí 🧬, who gave a truly fascinating and timely talk on the entry and impact of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Antarctica 🐦❄️.
Dr. Alcamí walked us through how this virus—traditionally associated with more temperate regions—has reached one of the most remote and vulnerable ecosystems on Earth: the Antarctica. He highlighted the mechanisms of transmission, the risks to local wildlife (particularly seabirds and marine mammals), and the potential long-term ecological consequences 🧊🐧.
The talk was not only scientifically enriching, but also deeply relevant given the current context of global environmental change and emerging infectious diseases 🌍🦠. It sparked insightful discussion among researchers from different fields, reinforcing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to complex challenges.
We're incredibly grateful to Dr. Alcamí for sharing his expertise and for raising awareness about a growing concern that connects virology, ecology, and conservation. Thank you for such an inspiring session! 🙌
