Polar seminar: Peter Convey

We are delighted to share that Professor Peter Convey from the British Antarctic Survey (Natural Environment Research Council, UK) delivered an insightful seminar on the diversity, evolution, and biogeography of terrestrial and freshwater life in Antarctica. ❄️🌱

His talk highlighted how, despite Antarctica often being perceived as a largely lifeless continent, its terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems are home to surprisingly rich communities dominated by lichens, lower plants, microarthropods, microinvertebrates, and microbial life. 🧬🧊

Drawing on decades of research and new molecular and ecological data, Peter Convey emphasized that Antarctic biota is shaped by a long history of glacial cycles, isolation, persistence, and regional diversification. These processes have led to a far more complex picture of Antarctic biodiversity than previously understood. 🌍🔬

The seminar also explored how recent advances in baseline surveys and molecular biology are transforming our understanding of Antarctic evolution, revealing strong links between geological history, glaciology, and the climatic and oceanographic processes that influence both isolation and colonisation. 🧊📊

Finally, the talk addressed the growing importance of this knowledge for conservation and management under the Antarctic Treaty System, especially in the context of increasing human activity and rapid regional climate change. 🌎⚠️
