Polar seminar: David Velázquez Martínez

We are pleased to share that Dr. David Velázquez Martínez from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid delivered an inspiring talk within the seminar series held in honor of Andrés Barbosa, focusing on cutting-edge research in polar ecosystems and environmental change. ❄️🌱

In his presentation, David introduced the MERIDIAN project, which investigates how environmental disturbances driven by climate change—particularly variations in temperature and soil moisture—affect soil microbial communities in polar regions, with a special emphasis on their role in biogeochemical cycles, especially the carbon cycle. 🌍🔬

Fieldwork has been conducted in key Antarctic regions, including the Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, Antarctica) and other areas of the Antarctic Peninsula, a region recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and extreme sensitivity to climate change, often described as a natural "sentinel" of global environmental shifts. 🧊📍

The project combines two consecutive Antarctic field campaigns, during which experimental plots were established to artificially modify snow accumulation. These manipulations allowed researchers to directly assess changes in soil temperature and moisture, and their effects on microbial activity and ecosystem functioning. ❄️📊

MERIDIAN is a truly multidisciplinary effort involving six research institutions, bringing together expertise in microbiology, ecology, and climate science. The knowledge generated is expected to contribute significantly to improving climate models and predicting how global warming may alter terrestrial ecosystem processes worldwide. 🌎🤝
