Polar seminar: Juan Höfer

Today, we were honored to host Dr. Juan Höfer, marine biologist and researcher at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile. In his seminar, Dr. Höfer talked about how glacier melting is reshaping coastal ecosystems in the Antarctic Peninsula and affecting local biogeochemical cycles.

• Interactions between the cryosphere and coastal ecosystems: Glacier melt introduces freshwater into the ocean, altering water column stability and impacting primary production and organic matter export.

• Marine microbiome and biogeochemistry: Bacterial communities, particularly those with high nucleic acid content, play a crucial role in nutrient and carbon cycling.

• Implications for global climate change: Local biogeochemical changes influence trace gas fluxes between ocean and atmosphere, which can amplify or mitigate climate change effects.
